Goa Mourns the Passing of Former Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik
Goa’s political landscape lost one of its senior-most leaders on Wednesday with the passing of Ravi Naik, the state’s Agriculture Minister and former Chief Minister. Naik, 79, suffered a cardiac arrest at his residence located around 30 kilometers from Panaji and was rushed to a private hospital in Ponda town, where doctors declared him dead around 1 a.m.
According to family sources, Naik experienced sudden chest pain late Tuesday night. Despite immediate efforts to revive him, the leader succumbed to cardiac complications in the early hours of Wednesday. His body has been kept at his Ponda residence for public homage before the final rites later in the day.
Ravi Naik's Long and Distinguished Political Career
Ravi Naik was among Goa’s most experienced politicians, having held several key portfolios over his decades-long public life. He served twice as Chief Minister of Goa, first in 1991 and later from 1994 to 1999, and represented the Ponda constituency for multiple terms.
Throughout his career, Naik was recognized for his grassroots connect and commitment to agriculture and rural development. As Agriculture Minister in the current government, he played an active role in strengthening Goa’s farming ecosystem, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and supporting local farmers with modern tools and subsidies.
Naik began his political journey in the 1970s and remained an influential voice across different political eras in Goa. His calm demeanor and administrative experience earned him respect across party lines.
Beyond politics, Ravi Naik was deeply respected for his simplicity and accessibility. His leadership style reflected a balance of traditional Goan values and forward-looking governance.
As a two-time Chief Minister and long-serving legislator, Naik contributed to the development of infrastructure, education, and agriculture, shaping policies that benefited rural communities and small farmers.
His passing marks the end of an era in Goa’s political history, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to public welfare.
