Goa Transport Directorate Mandates Tracking Devices in Public Vehicle
The Directorate of Transport, Government of Goa, has issued a public notice directing that all public service vehicles operating within the state must be fitted with vehicle location tracking devices (VLTDs) and emergency buttons by November 30, 2025.
The decision aligns with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (@MORTHIndia) regulations aimed at enhancing passenger safety and ensuring real-time monitoring of public transport operations.
Mandate Under Central Safety Framework
This mandate comes under the Motor Vehicles (Vehicle Location Tracking Device and Emergency Button) Order, which seeks to establish a uniform national system for tracking public transport vehicles. The Directorate’s directive reinforces Goa’s commitment to road safety and responsible governance by implementing the framework locally.
By integrating tracking systems, authorities will be able to ensure faster response times in case of distress situations, vehicle breakdowns, or emergencies.
Deadline Set for November 30
All public service vehicles, including taxis, buses, and transport vans, are required to comply with the directive before the November 30, 2025 deadline. Non-compliance may attract penalties under relevant transport regulations.
The department has urged vehicle owners and operators to initiate installations immediately to avoid last-minute delays or fines. Workshops and approved vendors will facilitate the installation of the tracking and safety devices.
Enhancing Public Safety Through Technology
Officials emphasized that this measure aims to create a safer and more accountable public transport ecosystem. With live tracking capabilities, law enforcement and transport authorities can monitor vehicle routes, identify deviations, and ensure driver compliance with operating norms.
Emergency buttons installed in vehicles will allow passengers to seek immediate help during emergencies, transmitting alerts directly to control centers and nearby authorities.
Strengthening Transport Infrastructure in Goa
Goa’s Transport Directorate has been steadily introducing digital safety measures to align with national goals of smart and secure transport systems. The integration of vehicle tracking and alert mechanisms not only improves transparency but also strengthens public trust in the transport sector.
This mandate highlights the state’s proactive approach to adopting technology for public welfare. With the implementation deadline fast approaching, vehicle owners and fleet operators are expected to complete compliance checks promptly to ensure smooth operations and enhanced passenger safety.
