Vishwajit Rane Emphasises Affordable Access to Essential and Life-Saving Therapies

Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has outlined a clear commitment to ensuring that essential and life-saving medical treatments are accessible and affordable for all citizens through the public healthcare system. Stressing the importance of healthcare equity, Rane said that high-cost therapies, including advanced cancer treatments, should not remain out of reach for patients due to financial constraints.

The approach reflects a broader effort to strengthen Goa’s public healthcare infrastructure and reduce the economic burden on families facing serious medical conditions.

Focus on Reducing Financial Burden on Patients

Rane highlighted that the rising cost of critical treatments often forces families into severe financial distress. By expanding access to expensive therapies at low or no cost in government hospitals, the administration aims to prevent healthcare-related impoverishment and ensure timely treatment for vulnerable sections of society.

According to him, affordability is a key pillar of effective public healthcare delivery.

Strengthening Public Hospitals for Advanced Care

The Health Minister noted that improving access to life-saving therapies requires continuous strengthening of public hospitals. This includes upgrading infrastructure, procuring advanced medical equipment, and ensuring the availability of essential medicines and specialised treatments within the government healthcare network.

Such measures, he said, are crucial to building public confidence in state-run healthcare institutions.

Cancer Care and Critical Treatments as a Priority

Rane specifically pointed to cancer treatment as an area where public intervention is vital due to the high cost of therapy. He said that providing advanced cancer care through public hospitals can significantly improve survival outcomes while reducing dependence on expensive private healthcare.

The focus on life-saving therapies also extends to other critical conditions requiring long-term or specialised treatment.

Towards a More Inclusive Healthcare Model

Observers note that the emphasis on affordable essential therapies aligns with a shift toward an inclusive, life-cycle healthcare model that supports citizens from prevention to advanced treatment. By prioritising access over affordability barriers, the administration aims to ensure that quality healthcare is not limited to those with financial means.

This approach reinforces the role of the state as a guarantor of basic health rights.

Concluding his remarks, Rane said that healthcare policies must be guided by public welfare and compassion. Ensuring affordable access to life-saving therapies, he added, is fundamental to building a resilient and humane healthcare system.

As reforms continue, affordable treatment access is expected to remain a central focus of Goa’s health policy agenda.
