Mangrove Buffer Zones: Goa’s Green Wall Against Climate Threats.

As sea levels rise and coastal ecosystems are stressed, Goa is turning to its oldest protectors, mangroves. Under the leadership of Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane, the state is systematically mapping, protecting, and expanding Mangrove Buffer Zones across its vulnerable belts.

These are designated green corridors between human habitation and coastlines, acting as shields during floods, cyclones, and tidal surges.

·        GIS Mapping of mangrove belts.

·        No-Development Zone (NDZ) buffer creation.

·        Community-led plantation drives.

·        School-level “Adopt a Mangrove” campaigns.

·        Quarterly eco-audits with drone surveillance.

Impact So Far:

·        Over 1,200 hectares of mangroves protected or replanted

·        Biodiversity index improved in 6 identified patches

·        Buffer zones now cover 12 km of flood-prone coastline

Goa’s mangroves aren’t just trees, they’re sentinels. And under Vishwajit Rane’s green governance, they’re being armed with policy and science.
