Goa Weather Alert: Thunderstorms and Rain Continue Across the State
Goa experienced light rainfall and thunderstorms on Thursday across most parts of the state, following three nights of moderate to heavy rain since October 20. While the daytime remained humid and sunny earlier in the week, temperatures dropped amid thunderstorms, and nights saw heavy downpours.
Meteorological Cause
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a depression over the southeast Arabian Sea, along with a low-pressure area over north interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining south interior Karnataka, has moved west-northwest and currently lies over south interior Karnataka and surrounding regions. These systems are responsible for the ongoing rainfall and thunderstorms in Goa.
Rainfall and Temperature Overview
Over the past 24 hours, very light to light rainfall occurred at most places, with moderate rainfall reported at isolated locations. The state recorded a maximum temperature of 33.0°C and a minimum of 25.2°C, with humidity at 90 per cent all above normal levels. For the next 48 hours, temperatures are expected to remain around 32°C (max) and 25°C (min).
IMD Yellow Alert and Safety Advisory
The IMD has issued a yellow alert till October 26, warning residents of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 km/h, reaching up to 50 km/h. Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations, with moderate to heavy showers predicted on Friday, followed by light to moderate rainfall on October 25-26. Residents are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and follow official weather advisories.
Goa’s weather remains unstable due to ongoing low-pressure systems and depressions in the region. Citizens are encouraged to remain alert, take necessary precautions, and monitor updates from the IMD to ensure safety during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
