Vishwajit Rane Announces Urban Forestry Mission to Strengthen Green Infrastructure in Goa

The Government of Goa has initiated a major Urban Forestry Mission aimed at developing sustainable green infrastructure inside city limits. The announcement was made by Forest and Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane, who stated that the project is designed to tackle rising urban temperatures, improve air quality and provide healthy public spaces for citizens. According to the department, municipal bodies across the state will participate in site identification, planning and long-term maintenance of the new green zones.

A Focus on Green Lungs Inside Cities

Explaining the vision behind the mission, Vishwajit Rane said the programme seeks to build “green lungs” within urban areas. These spaces will offer shade, reduce the heat island effect, restore biodiversity and create cleaner living environments for local communities. Urban centres in Goa have witnessed rapid population growth and concrete expansion, prompting the need for climate-resilient solutions that balance development with environmental safety.

Miyawaki Afforestation and Vertical Gardens

One of the major interventions under the mission is the introduction of the Miyawaki plantation technique. The department plans to implement this method in degraded areas, beginning with pilot projects in multiple municipalities. In addition, vertical gardens will be developed at suitable city locations to maximise green cover even in limited spaces.
Rane confirmed that expert planning support will be provided by StudioPOD, a firm specialising in sustainable urban design.

Sustainable Maintenance Using Wet Waste and Rainwater Harvesting

Authorities have emphasised that long-term sustainability will be a key focus. The Forest Department is exploring the use of wet waste as compost and rainwater harvesting structures to support the green zones throughout the year. Municipal officials are being trained to implement these systems to ensure the newly planted urban forests remain self-sustaining.

Joint Monitoring and Multi-Department Coordination

In a recent review meeting, Vishwajit Rane brought together municipal chairpersons, councillors and officials from both the Forest and Urban Development Departments. The minister confirmed that the project will be jointly monitored at every stage, including plantation, maintenance and public accessibility. This coordinated approach is expected to ensure transparency and faster implementation across all participating cities.

A Step Towards Climate-Resilient Goa

Environmental experts have welcomed the initiative as a timely response to climate change challenges. With urban temperatures rising each year and air quality deteriorating in many Indian cities, Goa’s decision to prioritise green infrastructure places it among the states adopting preventive climate measures. The Urban Forestry Mission supports the broader objective of creating a healthier, sustainable and resilient state.
