IndiGo Crisis Deepens: Over 500 Flights Cancelled Amid Nationwide Passenger Chaos

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is experiencing one of the most severe operational breakdowns in recent years, as widespread disruptions and mass cancellations continue for the fourth consecutive day. The cascading delays, which began earlier this week, have intensified into a nationwide aviation challenge, impacting thousands of passengers and putting pressure on both the airline and regulatory authorities.

Widespread Cancellations Across Major Airports

The disruptions continued into Friday morning with more than 400 flights cancelled, following a massive 550-flight cancellation on Thursday. Key metropolitan hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai recorded some of the highest numbers of cancellations.

On Thursday alone, Delhi airport saw at least 95 cancellations, Mumbai reported 85, Hyderabad 70, and Bengaluru 50. These numbers add to the 150 flights cancelled on Wednesday, marking a significant multi-day disruption across the airline’s vast domestic and international network.

Why the Disruptions Happened: Operational Factors Explained

According to IndiGo, a combination of operational challenges created a chain reaction that severely affected network stability. These factors include:

  • Updated Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) for crew safety, which disrupted roster planning and reduced crew availability.

  • Minor technology glitches that affected scheduling systems.

  • Winter weather conditions, especially in northern India, leading to fog-related delays and crew duty time overruns.

  • Increased congestion within the aviation system, amplifying delays at peak airports.

  • Schedule adjustments for the winter season, intensifying pressure on turnaround cycles.

The airline stated that this compounding impact was “not feasible to be anticipated” and resulted in widespread operational strain.

Airline’s Response and Apology to Passengers

Facing growing passenger frustration, IndiGo issued a formal public apology through social media platforms, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation. The airline emphasised that its teams are working “diligently and with the support of MOCA, DGCA, BCAS, AAI, and airport operators” to reduce the cascading impact of the delays.

IndiGo also assured that it is keeping passengers updated regarding schedule changes and encouraged travellers to check the latest status of their flights before reaching the airport.

Regulatory Oversight and Commitments to Restoration

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s aviation regulator, has taken note of the disruptions and sought detailed explanations on network stability and crew planning. According to reports, IndiGo has assured the regulator of complete restoration of stable operations by February 10.

As part of its stabilisation plan, the airline informed DGCA that cancellations may continue for the next 2–3 days as schedules are restructured to restore operational balance.

The Impact on Passengers and the Broader Aviation Ecosystem

The disruptions have caused significant inconvenience to travellers, resulting in missed connections, long airport queues, and last-minute ticket adjustments. With IndiGo commanding more than 60% of India’s domestic aviation market, the ripple effect has extended beyond individual flights, affecting airport congestion and on-ground operations.

Aviation analysts note that this incident highlights the challenges airlines face during peak travel periods when operational buffers are limited and external factors such as weather or regulatory changes can trigger system-wide instability.

Looking Ahead: Stabilisation Efforts and Key Takeaways

IndiGo’s assurance of returning to stable operations by February 10 will be closely watched by passengers and regulators. Strengthening crew availability, improving technical systems, and enhancing scheduling flexibility are likely to be key priorities over the coming weeks.

The incident also underscores the importance of resilient operational planning in India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector, where passenger volumes continue to rise and any disruption can lead to significant nationwide consequences.

As IndiGo works to restore normalcy, the ongoing disruption serves as one of the most significant stress tests the airline has faced in recent years. The coming days will be crucial in determining how effectively the airline can rebuild schedules, minimise passenger inconvenience, and regain the operational reliability for which it has long been known.
